Atalanta knock Dortmund out with the final kick of the game | OneFootball

Atalanta completed a memorable comeback to book their spot into the round of 16 at the expense of Borussia Dortmund.

The Bundesliga team looked firmly in control of the tie having completely frustrated Atalanta in the first leg and taking a 2-0 advantage to Bergamo.

However, this was a very different game. The home side took the lead inside the first five minutes with Dortmund failing to deal with a low cross from the left that found its way to Gianluca Scamacca to tap in.

The Serie A side were firmly on top in the first 45 minutes and drew level just before the break when a punch from Gregor Kobel only went as far as Davide Zappacosta. The full-back had time to send in a shot that took a big deflection off of Ramy Bensebaini to ensure it found the back of the net.

Then in the second half, Atalanta completed the turnaround from the first leg as Marten de Roon sent in a cross that Mario Pasalic headed in from close range.

BVB boss Niko Kovac had to react and he sent on attacking substitutes two of which combined to level the game on aggregate in the 75th minute when Carney Chukwuemeka found Karim Adeyemi to fire a classy effort past Marco Carnesecchi.

The game looked like it would be going to extra-time until a late twist. Kobel's distribution was intercepted and the goalkeeper was well out of position as he tipped a cross which looked like it was going to be converted by Nikola Krstovic. 

In desperation, Bensebaini flicked a leg out that seemed to clear the ball and hit the stooping head of Krstovic. The original decision was a corner with VAR intervening to award a penalty – Krstovic had got to the ball just milliseconds before Bensebaini's foot did with the Algerian then receiving his second yellow card of the night.

The resulting penalty was the final kick of the game and Lazar Samardzic kept his cool to lift the ball into the roof of the net with an unstoppable spot-kick to send Atalanta through.
