Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez continues to dominate the summer transfer window, and the Argentine striker’s latest comments about wanting a new challenge have now prompted a response from his Atletico Madrid teammate.
Following Argentina’s World Cup clash against Austria, Alvarez admitted that he believes “a transfer is best for everyone,” a statement that immediately reignited speculation surrounding his future.
Barcelona remain one of the clubs most closely linked with the forward, although Atletico Madrid have repeatedly insisted they are unwilling to negotiate with one of their biggest domestic rivals.
Now, midfielder Alex Baena has become the first Atletico player to publicly address the situation.
Speaking to El Partidazo de COPE from Spain’s national team camp, Baena admitted he would do everything possible to keep Alvarez at Atletico Madrid, while also acknowledging that every player has personal ambitions.

When asked about the possibility of Alvarez leaving, Baena said, “No, I wouldn’t sell any of my teammates.
“Thinking as a club, I would never sell my players to direct rivals.
“To the Premier League? No, if it were up to me, nowhere at all. Let him stay. I’d chain him down, but as a person, if he wants to pursue his dream, what can we do?”
The Spain international also revealed that he has not discussed the matter with Alvarez and is unaware of the striker’s current thinking behind the scenes.
“I knew nothing” about the situation, Baena admitted before offering his own explanation for why the Argentine could be considering a move.
“He might not be happy because it hasn’t been his best season.”
Drawing comparisons with his own campaign, Baena added,

“I’m not happy with my season either, but I’m where I want to be, and I’m in love with Atleti for everything.
“The fans, the stadium, the staff, my teammates, the city… I don’t think he wanted to leave two months ago, but well. Football changes.”
Alvarez’s public admission has naturally strengthened Barcelona’s hopes of signing one of their priority attacking targets.
However, despite the player’s willingness to seek a fresh start, Atletico Madrid have shown no indication of softening their position.
Club officials continue to maintain that they have no intention of opening negotiations with Barcelona, regardless of the growing transfer speculation.
