Despite their inactivity in the transfer market recently, FC Barcelona remain heavily linked to Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez. In fact, the situation concerning the club and player has now reached a lot of different ears, and fellow Atletico Madrid teammate Alex Baena recently weighed in on the situation as well.

Speaking to El Partidazo de COPE, as quoted by SPORT, the Atletico Madrid and Spanish National team star shared his thoughts and claimed that he would not let his teammate leave if it were up to him:

“No, I wouldn’t sell any teammate. Thinking as a club, I would never sell my players to direct rivals.”

He further clarified the statement, while simultaneously suggesting that ultimately the decision lies with Alvarez and no one can truly stop him from achieving his dream:

“He should stay. I’d put him on a chain. But as a person, if he wants to pursue his dream, what can we do?”

Moreover, Baena claimed that he was not aware of Alvarez’s desire to leave up until the player publicly stated it. Furthermore, he even suggested that a likely reason for the player’s disappointment could be the fact that he did not have the kind of season that he had been hoping for:

“Maybe he’s not happy because it hasn’t been his best season… I don’t think he wanted to leave two months ago, but football changes.”

Ultimately, this is one transfer saga that is likely to get even more heated than it is already. From potential legal avenues to possibly a historic new bid for the player, both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are set to continue clashing over their ongoing dispute over Alvarez’s future beyond this summer.

As it stands currently, the Catalan giants seem to be preparing their next move cautiously while the other club just so happens to be doing the same thing. The player himself, however, made sure to publicly announce that he hopes to leave this summer, and that gesture is something that La Blaugrana are now taking as their signal to launch a possible move moving forward.
