Augsburg dissatisfied with Frankfurt draw despite securing league status | OneFootball

FC Augsburg will be competing in the Bundesliga for the 16th year running after a draw with Eintracht Frankfurt secured survival with three games to spare. If it was in previous seasons, the celebrations will be wild as they usually guarantee safety in the final couple of weeks. However, the current team seems to set a new standard for Augsburg.

“What I liked after the match was that my team didn't break out into celebrations after securing our place in the league. We were actually very disappointed that we hadn't won. That just shows me how hungry they are for more,” said coach Manuel Baum after a deserved draw with European hopefuls Eintracht Frankfurt.

“For everyone in the stadium, it was certainly a fantastic game. The fans definitely enjoyed the ups and downs. We defended well, but we also saw how brilliantly Frankfurt can attack and solve one-on-one situations when they bring their quality to the pitch.” added the man who shaped the club's season in his second stint after Sandro Wagner’s failed experiment.

“The main feeling right now is disappointment,” agreed his captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw. “We did everything we could and even played a bit recklessly towards the end because we were desperate to come away with the win. 

“Securing survival now is not something to be taken for granted, especially when you look at the clubs behind us. A 16th straight year in the Bundesliga is proof of the positive development of our team and the club as a whole.”

Gouweleeuw has produced solid performances in recent weeks after missing the majority of the season with niggling injuries. With their remaining games pitting them against teams still in the relegation fight – Werder Bremen, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Union Berlin – it was essential for Baum's men to be mathematically safe ahead of time.
