Barcelona’s recruitment focus has quietly shifted back towards South America, where another contract standoff is beginning to draw serious attention across Europe.
A recent update from Fichajes suggests that Barcelona are keeping a very close eye on the situation of Ian Subiabre, a young forward whose future at River Plate looks increasingly uncertain.
The 18-year-old is approaching a decisive moment in his career. Talks over a contract extension have collapsed, and there is now little doubt that the relationship between player and club has reached breaking point.
Subiabre has made it clear that renewing his deal is not an option, a position that has left River Plate exposed and vulnerable ahead of the next transfer window.
This uncertainty has not gone unnoticed, as Chelsea are already studying the situation carefully, aware that contract disputes often create opportunities in the market.
The Premier League side is weighing up whether to act sooner rather than later, especially given their recent strategy of securing young talents before their value explodes.
Barcelona, however, believe this is a case worth serious consideration. The club have followed Subiabre’s development for a while and view him as a player who could naturally adapt to their footballing identity.

What makes this case particularly interesting for Barça is the context. Financial limitations mean the club cannot compete head-to-head with English sides purely on wages or transfer fees.
Instead, Barcelona are once again looking to sell a long-term sporting vision.
The current tension at River Plate could reduce the cost of any potential deal, offering a rare chance to move ahead of wealthier rivals.
From River Plate’s perspective, the situation is becoming increasingly uncomfortable. With no renewal in sight, the club’s priority is shifting towards safeguarding their interests.
Allowing a promising asset to run down his contract is not an option they want to consider, especially given the financial realities of South American football.
For Barcelona, acting early could make all the difference.
While Chelsea may have greater financial power, Barça are hoping that a clear development pathway will prove decisive.
