The brass at La Liga giants Barcelona have been left frustrated by the recent behaviour of midfield star Frenkie de Jong. This comes amid accusations of poor planning and decision-making on the part of the 29-year-old.
De Jong has of course seen his name take its place front and centre in the Spanish media headlines over the last week. After returning to Catalunya’s capital for a round of medical checks following the World Cup, the former Ajax man was revealed to have suffered a serious knee injury.
He is expected to be ruled out for several months as a result, leaving his employers short in midfield with a view to the new season.
And as alluded to above, De Jong’s conduct along the way has not gone down at all well on the part of those in a position of power at the Spotify Camp Nou…
As per a report from The Athletic:
‘Barca executives were not pleased by how the 29-year-old handled his fitness situation. Sources told The Athletic that De Jong preferred to not risk injury at the end of last season in order to arrive at the World Cup in better shape. Then he picked up this problem at the start of the tournament, and played through it for multiple games.’
It is also noted that Marc Bernal is expected to enjoy an increase in prominence over the months ahead, whilst De Jong remains unavailable.
