Barcelona have shortlisted Tottenham Hotspur defender Luka Vuskovic as one of the centre-backs to potentially bolster their defence this summer, according to AS.
Barca are looking for a new centre-half to provide competition for Eric Garcia, Ronald Araujo, Pau Cubarsi, and Gerard Martin, with Andreas Christensen poised to leave for free this summer.
Their primary target is Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni, but his €70 million price tag might prove too much for the Catalan side.
Tottenham’s Vuskovic is the alternative. Spurs signed him from Hajduk Split for around €12 million this summer, then loaned him to Hamburg, where he has turned heads.
Vuskovic has won 75% of his aerial and 57% of his ground duels in 24 Bundesliga appearances so far. His assuredness and confidence on the ball make him quite the prospect.
Vukovic’s ability in the opposition box is also remarkable. He has bagged five goals this term, a surprisingly high output for a defender.
His performances have caught the attention of other European giants like Bayern Munich.
He is reportedly open to moving to a top club and might consider a switch to the Spanish side.
However, adding another teenage defender to Barca’s already incredibly young squad might not be the way to go.
Barca’s rearguard is crying out for an experienced leader blessed with pace to maintain their high line. Vuskovic does not fit the profile.
Also, Tottenham will be determined to hold on to Vuskovic. They took a punt on the young talent, and they will want to reap the rewards of that brilliant move.
Tottenham will demand an arm and a leg to let him go, and rightly so.
With the future of defenders Cristian Romero, Micky Van de Ven, and Radu Dragusin up in the air, Spurs won’t be so keen on doing Barca any favours.
