This season’s UEFA Champions League group stage was a slightly unique experience for Barcelona. Just like every other participating club, the new version of the group stage has brought along with it various changes. Now a league format instead, Barcelona were tasked with playing against eight different opponents.
Ultimately, the Catalan giants managed to secure a solid second place on the league table that featured 36 teams in total. Following their recent encounter against Atalanta, Barcelona have now confirmed their place as the second-placed team in the Champions League for now.
With a direct qualification to the Round of 16 now sealed, and the club already being aware of the potential opponents that the team can face, Hansi Flick’s side have been quite successful from a sporting perspective. However, there is also the economic side of things that needs to be addressed.
According to SPORT, Barça’s participation in the tournament has been quite lucrative for the club so far. Following the conclusion of the league phase of the competition, Barcelona is now also aware of just how money the club has managed to secure from its involvement thus far.
Reportedly, the Catalan club has earned itself €44.9 million from the UEFA Champions League thus far. Out of that total, €18.6 million comes as the guaranteed reward that UEFA gives to each of the participating teams, and €13.3 million arrives as a result of Barça’s game by game performance.
Additionally, Barcelona have earned another €11 million due to their qualification to the Round of 16, and another €2 million has been earned by the club for directly qualifying rather than going through the playoffs. Summing everything up, that amounts to a total of €44.9 million.
Furthermore, as per SPORT, La Blaugrana have also managed to secure 35 ‘shares’ from the competition. These shares are each valued at €298,146 and the higher a team finishes in the league phase, the more they shares they can earn from a possible maximum total of 36. By finishing second, Barcelona have secured 35 shares and that amounts to around €10.4 million. Thus, in total, the Catalan giants have pocketed approximately €55 million from their progress in the Champions League this season.
Considering the precarious situation of the club’s finances and the consequent restrictions on them, these are significant earnings. However, Barcelona is not taking part in this competition only for the economic benefits, and the primary objective remains to go all the way and aim for the title itself irrespective of the hurdles or complications.
