Barcelona fan favourite could be out for over a month if he undergoes surgery – report | OneFootball

There is growing concern at FC Barcelona over the knee discomfort suffered by Gavi a little over a week ago.

The 21-year-old midfielder picked up the issue during training just before the game against Rayo Vallecano and sat out of the trip to Vallecas.

Initially, it was believed that the problem was not serious, and Hansi Flick even expected to have Gavi back for the game vs Valencia soon after the international break.

However, the discomfort has hardly eased for Gavi and in recent days, the possibility of him having to undergo surgery to address the issue has been raised.

Gavi could be out for a month

Building on that, Javi Miguel of AS reports that there is growing support inside Barcelona for an arthroscopic surgery to clean the joint and eliminate the nagging sensations preventing Gavi from training normally.

Medical staff have trialled several treatments to ease the issue, but none have brought the desired results. As a result, the young fan favourite has already been ruled out of the fixtures against Valencia, Newcastle United, and even more.

Now, should surgery be required, it would be a minimally invasive procedure, with the midfielder expected back in just over a month.

In that case, the timeline would push Gavi’s return until after the October international break. He would certainly miss seven matches: five in La Liga (against Valencia, Getafe, Oviedo, Real Sociedad and Sevilla) and two in the Champions League (Newcastle and PSG).

His comeback would be tentatively targeted for the Girona fixture in La Liga on 18 or 19 October.

For now, the next step depends on how Gavi’s condition evolves in the coming days. The midfielder arrived at the club facilities a while ago and will likely undergo further tests before a decision is made.
