Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski has had a slow start to the 2025/26 La Liga campaign, having missed the starting XI in all three of Barcelona’s opening matches.

However, the Poland international used the international break to regain confidence and reminded Hansi Flick of his quality, proving that he is ready to challenge Ferran Torres for the centre-forward spot.

During Poland’s World Cup qualifying matches, Lewandowski started in both games, helping his team secure a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands and a 3-1 victory over Finland.

He played 64 minutes against the Dutch and 68 minutes against Finland, scoring a goal and providing an assist in the latter.

These performances show that even at 37, Lewandowski remains sharp, motivated, and fully capable of influencing games at the highest level.

Hansi Flick faces a tough choice

Lewandowski’s return from international duty to Barcelona comes at a crucial moment and it is known that he is not the one who will settle for a secondary role.

Meanwhile, Ferran has started the season strongly, meaning Hansi Flick will have to make careful decisions about who leads the attack.

While the Spaniard is likely to start against Valencia, Lewandowski is expected to receive increasing minutes, keeping pressure on both players.

Gradual integration

The real test may come in the Champions League opener against Newcastle on September 18, where Flick will need to choose his main centre-forward for the European campaign.

At this stage in his career, Lewandowski’s strength lies in his finishing, positioning, and experience, even if he cannot match Torres’ off-the-ball dynamism.

This is also his final year under contract, and he is determined to leave a strong impression.

For Barcelona, having Lewandowski fully motivated could be a decisive factor as they enter a critical phase of the season, where every goal and contribution matters.
