Barcelona will experience a rare and symbolic moment in the upcoming Catalan derby, as they are set to wear their traditional blue and garnet colours at the RCDE Stadium for the first time in a decade.

According to a report from Sergi Sole in Mundo Deportivo, La Liga have given Barcelona the green light to play in their classic Blaugrana colours at Cornella-El Prat.

This will mark the first time since January 13, 2016, that Barcelona wear their iconic blue and garnet stripes at Espanyol’s current stadium.

That last occasion came during the second leg of the Copa del Rey Round of 16, a match Barcelona won 2–0 while wearing a blue and garnet striped shirt with red shorts.

Interestingly, they had worn the same kit just 11 days earlier in a league clash at the same venue, a game that ended goalless.

Since then, Barcelona’s visits to the RCDE Stadium have been accompanied by a wide variety of alternative kits rather than their traditional colours.

What’s the story?

The outlet mentions that out of Barcelona’s 16 visits to Espanyol’s current home, they have worn their first-choice kit only four times.

Two of those came right at the beginning, with a 0-0 draw in the 2009/10 season and a memorable 5-1 win in 2010/11.

The upcoming derby will therefore be just the fifth time Barcelona step onto that pitch dressed in Blaugrana.

While Barcelona have received approval to wear their traditional colours, the same freedom will not apply to supporters.

In line with Espanyol’s regulations, fans attending the RCDE Stadium will not be allowed to wear any Barcelona or blue-and-garnet insignia.

Over the years, Barcelona’s kit choices at Cornella-El Prat have been remarkably varied.

Yellow and the Catalan ‘senyera’ have featured most frequently, used in four matches. Other colours have included black, orange, maroon, and even mango.

Notably, Barcelona clinched the La Liga title at this stadium wearing their black kit last season in a 2–0 victory.

Two seasons earlier, they sealed the championship there in the yellow senyera kit.
