Barcelona halted ticket sales for Champions League match against Newcastle after detecting irregular purchases by away fans.

Ticket sales stopped before Champions League clash

FC Barcelona have temporarily suspended ticket sales for their UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg against Newcastle United scheduled for 18 March at Camp Nou.

According to reports from Marca, the club detected several irregular ticket transactions that could allow English supporters to sit outside the official away section.

Barcelona officials warned that such situations could pose safety risks inside the stadium if rival fans are mixed in the same stands.

In official statement released on Monday, the Catalan club confirmed that ticket sales had already been paused since Friday while the situation was reviewed.

New security measures and ticket controls

Barcelona said ticket sales will resume on Tuesday after new control measures are implemented. The club plans to strengthen monitoring of ticket purchases and limit resale activity to prevent Newcastle supporters from entering areas reserved for home fans.

Among the security measures introduced are nominal tickets linked to specific names, restrictions on purchases from UK-based IP addresses or bank cards and strict rules banning away fans from wearing team colors outside the designated visiting section.

The club also confirmed there will be no ticket sales at the stadium on match day urging supporters without tickets not to travel to Barcelona.

Security staff and police coordination will be increased to ensure order during the match.

Avoiding a repeat of the 2022 incident

Barcelona are determined to avoid a repeat of the situation in 2022 when around 30,000 Eintracht Frankfurt supporters managed to enter Camp Nou during a Europa League match filling large sections of the stadium intended for Barcelona fans.

That episode caused major controversy and forced the club to review its ticketing policies for high-risk European games.

By tightening ticket controls now, Barcelona hope to prevent similar scenes when Newcastle visit for what is expected to be a high-demand Champions League fixture.

Demand for tickets remains very high

Interest in the match remains strong among Newcastle fans. Reports suggest more than 10000 supporters have applied for tickets, with the club potentially receiving around 3,100 seats if stadium capacity adjustments are approved.

The fixture is considered one of the biggest European nights for Newcastle supporters in recent years adding further pressure on Barcelona to maintain strict security measures.
