FC Barcelona are continuing to plan ahead for the summer transfer window, with reinforcing the defence seen as one of the main priorities. While the focus remains on bringing in a new centre back, the club is also keeping a close eye on the full back positions.

For this purpose, they have been linked with several interesting names, and in this context, Mundo Deportivo reports that one player whom they have scouted recently is the fullback Marco Palestra, who is owned by Atalanta but is currently playing on loan with Cagliari.

The Italian defender is particularly valued for his versatility, as he is capable of operating on both flanks while being comfortable with both feet. His attacking output has also stood out, making him an appealing profile for a side that demands offensive contribution from fullbacks.

Palestra’s rise over the last year has been significant. His market value has increased sharply to around €30 million. He has also earned his senior debut for Italy during the last international break.

However, Barcelona are not alone in the race. Manchester City, Arsenal, Juventus, and Inter Milan have all been linked with the full-back.

The interest in Palestra is also linked to uncertainty around the current squad. Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde both have admirers in the market, while a decision still needs to be made regarding negotiations with Al Hilal to retain Joao Cancelo.

From a tactical standpoint, Palestra fits the profile Barcelona are looking for. He is an attack-minded fullback who frequently pushes forward and has largely operated as a wingback this season. His ability to deliver crosses and beat defenders in one-on-one situations adds an extra dimension in the final third.

Defensively, there is still room for improvement, particularly in terms of positioning and tactical discipline. However, his physical attributes and presence in duels offer a solid base to build on.

Within Hansi Flick’s system, his versatility could be a key asset. With Lamine Yamal occupying the right wing, Palestra could be more suited to operating on the left initially, while still providing cover on both sides when required.

Ultimately, Barcelona’s next steps will depend on how their defensive structure evolves in the coming months. Any arrivals in the full back positions will be closely linked to potential departures and the outcome of talks for Cancelo.

For now, Palestra remains a player being closely monitored, but he is clearly one of the profiles under consideration as the club continues to plan for the future.
