FC Bayern’s attacking prowess is currently generating a lot of excitement – but not everyone sees it exclusively as a reflection of Munich’s quality. Club legend Sepp Maier has clear words on the current situation in the Bundesliga
The former world and European champion makes it clear that Bayern’s impressive scoring rate also has a downside in his view: „If you look at the whole league, I have to say: it has become weak,“ explained Maier in an interview with the Münchner Merkur/tz
Munich are heading for historic records this season and could break the legendary goal record of 101 goals from 1972 – the year in which Maier himself was in goal
But for the 82-year-old, this fact is less a reason for euphoria than a warning signal: „The others should think about that,“ says Maier
In his view, the reason for the many clear victories lies not only in Bayern’s strength, but above all in the lack of quality of the competition
Maier drew a clear comparison with his playing days, saying that the opponents back then were much stronger, which is why high victories were much rarer. „We didn’t win so often so high, but that wasn’t because of us, but because of the better opponents,“ emphasized the goalkeeping icon
Despite his critical assessment, Maier doesn’t begrudge the current Bayern team the possible record. For him, breaking records is part of soccer. „Records are there to be broken,“ he said and made it clear: „I celebrate every Bayern goal.“
However, Maier does not see a new era like the 1970s, saying that the framework conditions in modern soccer have changed significantly
More transfers, more unrest and much greater pressure would make it more difficult to build up a similarly dominant phase as in the days of Franz Beckenbauer and co
For Maier, it is therefore clear that although the current Bayern are successful, the conditions for historic dominance have changed fundamentally.
