Bayern Munich are once again sweating over the fitness of Alphonso Davies after the Canadian left back suffered another injury setback in Saturday’s Bundesliga win. FCB head coach Vincent Kompany sounded a tentative all-clear while he conducted his post-match interview with DAZN. Bayern board-member-for-sport Max Eberl was nevertheless more pessimistic in the mixed zone.
Davies’ return from the brutal (and controversial) ACL tear he suffered last spring, understandably enough, has been a slow process. Davies officially returned to action just prior to Christmas. The 25-year-old has earned four league and one cup start in his 12 appearances for Bayern across all competitions.
Not looking especially confident or quick in his Bundesliga stars, Davies was at least able to register an assist off the bench in last weekend’s away win over Bremen. Apart from that, however, the 58-times-capped Canadian international hasn’t managed to get his name on the scoresheet.
Davies had to exit proceedings in the 50th minute in Saturday’s league win over Eintracht Frankfurt. Ankle trouble left him unable to continue. The only thing Kompany and Eberl appeared to be in agreement about relates to the fact that Davies will miss at least two weeks.
“I don’t know if it will be two or four weeks,” Kompany told DAZN. “But my gut feeling is that it won’t take that long.”
“It looks like he’ll be out for longer,” Eberl nevertheless said in the mixed zone. “It appears to be something muscular.”
