Dayot Upamecano of Bayern Munich has emerged as one of the most sought-after defenders in the market heading into 2026, thanks to his contract situation.

The French centre-back’s current deal expires at the end of the ongoing campaign, and an agreement over a new one has not been reached yet.

As such, a number of top clubs, including FC Barcelona, have shown a strong interest in signing him as a free agent in the summer.

After all, the Blaugrana are on the lookout for a defensive reinforcement after the departure of Inigo Martinez in the summer.

Bayern Munich not giving up

However, speaking to BILD (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl confirmed that the club are intent on retaining Upamecano and are still in talks with his camp over a renewal.

“Upamecano is one of the best defenders in the world. We would like to keep him at the peak of his career as internal star signing,” said Eberl.

“We are still talking. I believe I can sense that Upa feels very comfortable with the path we have chosen,” he added.

Upamecano has been one of the Bavarians’ best performers this season, playing an integral role in their excellent start under Vincent Kompany.

So, it is natural that the reigning Bundesliga champions are fighting to renew the contract of the French international.

With Bayern Munich not giving up, it remains to be seen what Upamecano decides, considering that he has the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, and PSG all vying for his signature in the summer.
