Bayern Munich and Chelsea go head-to-head in their opening fixture of this season’s Champions League on Wednesday evening.
Both sides will be searching for a strong start to the league, with Bayern beginning theie quest to reclaim European glory at their home ground.
Bayern Munich could hand minutes to new signing Nicolas Jackson, who is free to face parent club Chelsea due to UEFA’s rules. Jackson joined Bayern on loan from Chelsea on transfer deadline day.
The Bavarian giants have been impressive under Vincent Kompany, with Harry Kane leading the line in outstanding form, having scored eight goals in just five games this season.
The German champions remain without key players, however, including Jamal Musiala, who suffered a fractured fibula during the Club World Cup and is not expected to return until late November.
Alphonso Davies continues his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury sustained in March, and is also targeting a November return. Central defender Hiroki Ito is sidelined with a metatarsal fracture. Elsewhere, Raphael Guerreiro was taken off against Hamburg earlier this week and is a doubt.
Luis Díaz has made an excellent start to life in Bavaria following his transfer from Liverpool, scoring on his competitive debut and providing goals and assists in his first few appearances.
Chelsea have been dealt several injury blows ahead of their Champions League return. Summer signing Dario Essugo has been ruled out for three months after undergoing surgery on a thigh injury sustained on international duty. The Portuguese midfielder is not expected to return until 2026.
Liam Delap remains unavailable due to a hamstring problem that will keep him out until November. Levi Colwill also faces an extended layoff with a cruciate ligament injury that could sideline him for the majority of the season.
However, there was positive news with Cole Palmer’s return from injury. The England international came off the bench to score in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Brentford, marking his first goal of the season and proving his fitness ahead of the Munich trip.
Vincent Kompany’s side have enjoyed a perfect start to the campaign, winning all five of their competitive fixtures. They opened with a dominant 6-0 victory over RB Leipzig, followed by narrow wins against Wehen Wiesbaden and Augsburg. Most recently, they thrashed Hamburg 5-0 in the Bundesliga, with Kane scoring twice and Luis Díaz also finding the net.
The Bavarians also claimed silverware early in the season, defeating VfB Stuttgart 2-1 to win the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. Their attacking prowess has been evident, scoring 19 goals and conceding just five across all competitions.
Enzo Maresca’s side have made an unbeaten start to the Premier League season but have dropped points in recent matches. After securing Champions League qualification last season and winning the FIFA Club World Cup over the summer, the Blues have shown resilience but struggled for consistency.
Their most recent outing saw them draw against Brentford, with Cole Palmer’s return proving crucial. Moises Caicedo’s spectacular long-range strike appeared to have won the match before Fabio Carvalho’s stoppage-time equaliser denied them victory.
Bayern Munich: Neuer; Laimer, Upamecano, Tah, Stanišić; Kimmich, Pavlović; Olise, Gnabry, Díaz; Kane.
Chelsea: Sanchez; James, Chalobah, Tosin, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernández; Neto, Palmer, Gittens; Pedro.
