Manchester United Women head to the Allianz Arena this evening, facing a season-defining test as they look to overturn a narrow first-leg deficit against German champions Bayern Munich.
The Red Devils arrive in Bavaria trailing 3–2 after a dramatic encounter at Old Trafford last week. Marc Skinner’s side showed resilience to equalise twice through Maya Le Tissier and Hanna Lundkvist.
However, a late winner from Momoko Tanikawa handed Bayern a slender advantage heading into the second leg. Despite a recent 3–0 derby defeat to Manchester City, United’s European campaign has been historic. Notably, they have kept eight clean sheets in their 12-match European run so far.
Bayern Munich, meanwhile, are aiming to protect their unbeaten home record and reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2021. The German giants have been imperious at home, having not tasted defeat in Munich for over a year.
Under José Barcala, Bayern recovered brilliantly from a 7–1 loss to Barcelona on Matchday 1 to finish fourth in the league phase. Boasting a commanding 13-point lead in the Frauen-Bundesliga, the Bavarians recently dispatched Wolfsburg 4–1 to underline their continental credentials.
José Barcala continues to manage a significant injury list, with Lena Oberdorf and Sarah Zadrazil both recovering from cruciate ligament injuries. Notably, Klara Bühl—who set a league phase record with eight assists—remains sidelined with a muscular issue. Goalkeeper Anna Klink also misses out with a minor muscle tear. However, the hosts can rely on Pernille Harder, who netted twice in the first leg.
Marc Skinner has confirmed that leading scorer Elisabeth Terland will miss tonight’s clash through fitness concerns. Ella Toone and Leah Galton also remain unavailable, though Julia Zigiotti Olme is back from a domestic suspension.
Notably, the squad features former Bayern stars Fridolina Rolfö and Lea Schüller, the latter having scored over 100 goals for the German club. Hinata Miyazawa is expected to keep her place in midfield following her Asian Cup success.
Bayern Munich are in ruthless form, recently securing their 18th successive home league victory with a 2-0 win over Nürnberg. The Bavarians have won all five of their previous home Champions League meetings with English sides. Significantly, they have lost only once across all competitions this entire season.
Manchester United’s form has stuttered lately, with the side winning only one of their last six competitive matches. However, their European road form remains a source of optimism; the Red Devils have won three of their five UWCL away games this term. Significantly, their only previous trip to Germany resulted in a 5–2 defeat at Wolfsburg in November.
Bayern Munich Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Mahmutovic; Gwinn, Viggósdóttir, Gilles, Simon; Caruso, Stanway; Dallmann, Tanikawa, Kett; Harder
Manchester United Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Tullis-Joyce; Riviere, Le Tissier, Turner, Lundkvist; Zigiotti Olme, Miyazawa, Naalsund; Park, Malard, Rolfö
