Vincent Kompany explains his changes after Bayern’s comeback in Mainz. Olise, Kane and Musiala didn’t just come into the game because of the deficit.
FC Bayern were 3-0 down at the break against 1. FSV Mainz 05. After the break, Vincent Kompany brought on Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala, among others, and the trio then played a big part in the Munich side turning the game around to win 4-3.
After the game, the Bayern coach was asked whether the substitutions of the stars had been planned in advance or were only necessary because of the deficit. Kompany clarified: „It was planned.“
The Belgian explained that it was not his intention to completely rest his key players. At the same time, he wanted to control the workload ahead of the upcoming tasks. „I don’t want to just leave everyone on the bench or give them a vacation, and at the same time I don’t want to take any unnecessary risks,“ said Kompany.

With the changes, the record champions got into the game much better after the break. Olise scored to make it 2:3 and later set up Musiala’s equalizer. Kane scored the winner shortly afterwards to complete the spectacular comeback.
Kompany nonetheless classified the move primarily in terms of stress management. „It was about keeping fitness levels high,“ explained the 40-year-old. The substitutions were therefore part of a plan to maintain the rhythm of the stars.
This approach paid off immediately for Bayern in Mainz. After a weak first half, the substitutes brought new energy, more determination and decisive quality to the game. Kompany had initially used his top players in doses, but did not have to do without their effect in the end.
