Benfica head into the pause with a win over Vitória de Guimarães and a firm message from José Mourinho. According to Glorioso 1904, he accepted the display was less than sparkling, while praising the team’s efficiency.
Gianluca Prestianni and Vangelis Pavlidis scored, and a deflection off Beni Mukendi resulted in an own goal. The coaching staff also underlined a high press that forced turnovers in advanced areas.
Benfica finished with a clean sheet for the first time in several outings, a timely boost in defensive consistency before the decisive run-in.
Mourinho felt the result did not fully reflect the opponent’s quality, but judged his side pragmatic and noted improvement in their finishing.
With the points secured, he asked his players to switch off during the pause and return fully focused.
Approaching the final stretch, Benfica sit third on 62 points, level with second-placed Sporting, who have a game in hand, as both chase leaders Porto.
Their next fixture is scheduled for six April, away to Casa Pia in Rio Maior.
