Benfica are closing in on appointing Marco Silva after days of intensive negotiations and a significantly improved offer to the Portuguese coach.

According to A BOLA, finance was not the sole obstacle, with Silva seeking firm sporting guarantees and an active role in squad building after years in England. In recent hours Rui Costa and Mário Branco are said to have moved to meet those points, and Silva has been told he would hold a strong voice in strategic decisions.

The club’s package is around five million euros net per season, plus a sizeable signing-on bonus. Silva also has a Fulham renewal on the table worth about seven and a half million euros net a year.

With most demands now met, an agreement is described as close. Formal confirmation still hinges on the situation of José Mourinho, the current Benfica coach, who remains under contract and continues to be linked with Real Madrid, a scenario expected to be clarified after the presidential election on 7 June.

If Florentino Pérez is re-elected, Madrid should move to hire Mourinho by paying a 15 million euros release clause, opening the way for Marco Silva to head to the Luz.
