Tottenham received a reality check from Manchester City after a fast start to the season which prompted club captain Bethany England to apologise to fans.

Spurs were on the wrong end of a 5-1 thrashing at home from City on Friday night.

Tottenham had kicked off their WSL campaign with back to back wins against Everton and Leicester.

Despite their quick start to the season, Spurs were brought back down to earth against Manchester City.

City scored five on the road and looked back to their formidable best against a Spurs team void of any real defensive answers.

When asked how she felt about the result, Tottenham captain Bethany England didn’t hold back in her assessment of the game.

“Disappointment, anger and a lot of self-reflection,” she said. “We know it wasn’t good enough. I just said in the media to the fans, we’re sorry for that performance. We’ve prided ourselves on a strong start.

“We need to be stronger and realise that they can be punished, as we saw when we scored a cracking goal, they do concede. But on the day, we have to not be fearful. I don’t think we were fearful, but I do think we gave them far too much respect.”

Olivia Holdt scored Tottenham’s only goal of the night with just three minutes to play but by then it was too little too late.

“In the first 15 minutes, I thought we were all over them, we just weren’t able to create an opportunity and take our chance. Unfortunately, they went and scored, and it knocked the wind out of us,” England continued.

“We obviously need to reflect and see where we can improve, but we’re just sorry because it wasn’t good enough.”

Spurs don’t have long to recover from the City loss but they do have a good opportunity to bounce back in the week.

The first round of the League Cup kicks off on Wednesday night with Spurs facing Aston Villa.
