When it comes to transfer targets, the sky can be the limit for Birmingham City, but they've got to ensure that the performances are there to convince big players to buy into the journey.

It's well-documented that the ambitions of Tom Wagner and the rest of the Birmingham board are high, but so far this season, the Championship hasn't been as much of a cakewalk as last year's League One campaign.

Chris Davies' side hasn't adapted to the second tier as quickly as anticipated, and as a result, when it comes to improving the squad when the January transfer window opens, Jason Moore, FLW's Blues fan pundit, doesn't feel that top-level prospects would want to join a side that could just be sitting in the Championship's mid-table.

Therefore, when it comes to helping improve with a realistic signing, Moore has surprisingly urged Birmingham to take a look at League One and target Barnsley's Davis Keillor-Dunn to help give Chris Davies' side the attacking boost that they need.

The patient build-up style Chris Davies had Birmingham playing last season against vastly inferior opposition has continued into the current Championship campaign.

Whilst this means that the chances that Birmingham create end up being high-quality ones, it unfortunately means that they aren't created at a high volume, as Championship defences are more switched on for longer periods, as shown through the Blues having the second-lowest number of shots on target in the Championship this season.

"It's a bit of a tough one with Blues, because I still feel we need a few additions, but the question here is realistic, and anyone we need is on the higher end of the budget, but the way we're playing, I don't think we attract them," Moore explained.

The Birmingham fan pundit believes that his side needs to target someone who can turn the screw and add some pace to their attacks, and he's gone back to someone he admired during their time in League One to add that.

"We definitely need pace, and someone who comes to mind who I liked in League One and I think he'd do a job in the Championship is Davis Keillor-Dunn," he said.

"He looked like a real player when we played them, and he's still doing it now in League One from what I've seen."

The 27-year-old netted once against the Blues last season in a 6-2 defeat at St Andrew's, but looked a bright spark throughout what was a tough campaign for the Tykes, scoring 18 goals overall. He's taken that form into the current campaign, netting six in his opening 10.

"From what I've seen, he can play across the front four, which is what we need, so I'd try and get him out of Barnsley, as he can do a job in the Championship for us," Moore added.

"Whether that's where the club will be looking? I'm not too sure, but that's a realistic signing we can get."

It'd be hard to turn the Championship down if Davis Keillor-Dunn is targeted by Birmingham City in January

Keillor-Dunn's rise over the past few seasons has been incredible. The 27-year-old was the talisman for Mansfield Town's promotion to League One in the 2023/24 campaign, and then continued his scoring prowess in the third tier since.

There was rumoured interest in the Barnsley man from the likes of Charlton Athletic and Middlesbrough in the summer, and you'd expect there to be more Championship interest if he keeps his scoring form up. And given the money Birmingham can throw at teams and players, it'll be difficult to turn it down, you'd expect.

The Tykes were reportedly asking for something in the region of £5 million in the summer, and that number would likely increase in the middle of the campaign, but if Birmingham aren't in a position on the field to splash the cash at top-level targets, they may look to do so at the likes of Keillor-Dunn.

Barnsley will hope that they can keep the 27-year-old as they look to get back to the second tier themselves, but either way, Keillor-Dunn has Championship potential, and you'd bank on him getting there sooner rather than later.
