Bolton Wanderers are considering a second move for Charlton Athletic striker Gassan Ahadme in their attempts to beef up Steven Schumacher's attacking options.

Bringing in a new number nine is one of the League One club's well-known priorities for the remainder of the transfer window. However, as the boss has said, they can't just go for any number nine, one that is going to make up the numbers. It has to be the "right" one.

They have had their sights set on a couple of targets throughout this window, one of them being Ahadme. The 24-year-old Charlton forward was linked with Bolton last month by local outlet the Bolton News, and it had been reported on the Addicks' end that a fee had been agreed between the two former divisional rivals.

Wanderers have also been interested in signing Jonny Kenny from Celtic, although there is a half-a-million gap between their valuation of the young goalscorer and the Scottish side's asking price.

Amid the stalling pursuit of Kenny, it was reported on Wednesday by Alan Nixon that Bolton are thinking of going back in for the Moroccan.

Bolton bosses backed to move forward with their Gassan Ahadme interest

His record with the south London club hasn't been outstanding since he joined them for £1 million last summer from Ipswich Town. That said, a lot of the additions that the Trotters have made this summer have impressed one of Football League World's Bolton fan pundits, Liam O'Meara, in their so far brief tenures.

If Schumacher and the recruitment team see Ahadme as the answer, they are getting the full backing of O'Meara.

He said: "I see that he [Ahadme] got two [goals] in a pre-season friendly last week, and I did wonder if Charlton would potentially put him in the shop window with that appearance. And the fact that he scored two maybe has encouraged Bolton to make a move.

"The only thing is that we're not getting the right noises regarding Kenny from Celtic that is making Bolton want to potentially move.

"We do need a striker. We absolutely need a striker. And with the signings that we've made so far, quite a lot of them look very impressive.

"So if Fergal Harkin [Bolton's sporting director], Steven Schumacher, and the others that are involved in this transfer think that, you know, this is the right move for us, then I'm willing to trust them at this stage. They seem to be making the right decision so far."

Mason Burstow's opening day performance should give Bolton some extra time to complete their striker hunt

The day after Ahadme was first linked with a move to the Toughsheet Community Stadium, Bolton announced the loan signing of Hull City centre-forward Mason Burstow.

The 22-year-old former Chelsea player gained notoriety while with Charlton before he got his move to Stamford Bridge, and then again in a temporary return spell with the Addicks.

Since then, the young attacker has struggled to find his feet in the EFL, but a more bulky-looking Burstow turned out for the first game of the season against Stockport County and more than held his own. He could have won a penalty in the first half when he was seemingly pulled back in the box after a shot was flashed across Corey Addai's goal from the right-hand side.

His performance against the promotion hopeful Hatters will have encouraged Schumacher and the club's supporters, and, maybe more importantly, put less pressure on Harkin and others to find a new centre-forward, because we've seen that Burstow is at the requisite level.
