Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are mulling a move to sign Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong following his breakout campaign (h/t the Independent).

The Blues were previously opposed to letting him leave, even on loan. However, Chelsea may be willing to do business for £35 million.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca gave Acheampong a chance in the first team, and he grabbed it with both hands.

He has impressed at right-back, centre-back, and even left-back when needed.

Acheampong is brave on the ball, and his penchant to drive forward has excited the Stamford Bridge faithful. He is composed when he steps into midfield.

He is set to sign a new deal. Maresca said he was ‘in love’ with Acheampong after he produced an assured performance in the 3-0 win over Legia Warsaw.

Unfortunately, Chelsea’s excessive expenditure on their youth project has resulted in the sales of Lewis Hall, Conor Gallagher, and Mason Mount to balance the books.

The club has been trying to sell solid defender Trevoh Chalobah for ‘pure profit’ amid pressure from the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Chelsea might have the same plan for Acheampong. However, they risk drawing the ire of fans by selling off another talented product to finance their scattergun strategy.

Acheampong was one of the bright spots of the 2024/25 season. He drives the ball purposefully, better than the other full-backs on the books.

Physically, he looks ready for senior men’s football.

There may be more chances for him to impress as Chelsea manage injury-prone captain Reece James and Malo Gusto struggles with poor form.

If Chelsea do not sign a left-back to back up Marc Cucurella, Acheampong has shown he can hold his own on that side of the pitch.

Fans will be looking forward to watching one of their own bombing down the flanks.
