Bradley Barcola’s opener for Paris Saint-Germain against Chelsea stirred memories of Ezequiel Lavezzi’s 2014 strike versus the same opponents. PSG won the Champions League last-16 first leg 5-2 on Wednesday.
L'Équipe highlights close parallels, from the early timing to a chest control and a half-volley that flew in off the bar.
Barcola struck in the 10th minute at the Parc des Princes to set PSG on their way. His effort bounced down off the crossbar before crossing the line.
In April 2014, Laurent Blanc’s side hosted Chelsea in the quarter-final first leg, only three years into the QSI era. In the third minute, Ezequiel Lavezzi beat Petr Cech with a half-volley that hit the bar and went in, as Paris won 3-1.
Supporters noted the likeness, even the near-identical patch of turf, and shared it widely on social media. Despite that first-leg win, Paris were eliminated on the now-abolished away-goals rule after a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge in the return.
