We’re 5 minutes into Chelsea’s game against Bournemouth, with the Blues looking to recover after a shocking defeat at the weekend, and already things are going badly.
The Blues have had a horrific disciplinary record all year, and it looks like it’s going to get worse. Moises Caicedo has a yellow for a foul on Adrien Truffert.

In this case, Caicedo wasn’t left much of a choice. Bournemouth are breaking and he’s got to stop it. It didn’t look like the midfielder touched him much – if it all. But simply by throwing himself in the way he’s stopping his momentum up the pitch and breaking up the attack, and refs are always inclined to give that.
Caicedo has to know that, and evidently he’s made the decision it was an attack worth stopping. In normal circumstances, we might agree. But after just 5 minutes it might be worth just trying to chase him down. And when you consider the effect the ban will have, that’s especially true.
“Caicedo’s reputation might have preceded him there. Very minor contact on Truffert and a booking particularly harsh,” Sky Sports’ Dan Jones said.
“Maresca right in fourth official James Linington’s ear. And you can’t blame him, given that rules him out of a huge game on Sunday.”
Even more worryingly, the Ecuador star now has to be careful for the next of the game.
Enzo Fernandez is struggling for form right now, and there are questions about whether he should be in the team, with an ESPN podcast pointing out that he may not be good enough to play in midfield in games where Chelsea need to defend.
Gabs and Juls also discussed the general construction of this squad and how it has limited Enzo Maresca’s options in general.
