The contracts of both Zak Vyner and Anis Mehmeti are soon to expire - Bristol city must take action

Bristol City pair Zak Vyner and Anis Mehmeti are soon to be out of contract, which means Bristol City must take action ahead of the new year.

Bristol City have got off to an unbeaten start this season and occupy the final play-off spot, having earned themselves eight points after four games with two wins and two draws.

The Robins have been getting closer to reaching their Premier League goal over the past couple of seasons, with an impressive sixth-place finish last time out and look to be play-off candidates under the guidance of Gerhard Struber.

However, with notable names soon to be out of contract, such as the likes of Zak Vyner and Anis Mehmeti, a loss of key players could be detrimental to the Robins' season and, therefore, action must be taken at Ashton Gate on whether to get a fee for them in Janaury or protect their valuable assets for the future - only time will tell.

Zak Vyner is a vital part of Bristol City defence

Zak Vyner, who has just entered his sixth full season with Bristol City, has been a constant in their backline and is well-regarded around Ashton Gate for producing consistently high performance levels, making him a clear fan favourite as well as one of the first names on the team sheet due to his reliability.

Vyner's contract is set to run out at the end of June 2026 and would for sure be a player that the Robins would want to keep around as it is unlikely that his transfer fee would bring any major injection of cash to the club. Being 28-years of age, the steely defender has been central to binding the Bristol City backline together, meaning his absence could leave a massive void to fill.

The likelihood of finding a replacement who can replicate his consistency and services to the club, could be slim for the Robins who, as aforementioned, are unlikely to receive a hefty fee if he were to depart Ashton Gate.

If he is to be offered a new contract, even if it means for the short-term, it could well be the difference in the Robins finally gaining promotion to the top-flight. The Kenyan international would be able to retain his place and continue where he left off, as last season he played a part in every Championship fixture as well as in their play-off campaign. It would go down as a warm welcomed contract extension from the Bristol City faithful.

Anis Mehmeti's goal threat could be dearly missed at bristol City

Bristol City's Anis Mehmeti has played a vital role in their forward line over the past few years, with last season being his best to date. The Albanian international scored 12 goals and provided one assist in 44 league appearances last campaign, which led the Robins into the play-off spots.

The 24-year-old has kicked off the 2025/26 season in the same fashion as his connection he has formed with teammates Scott Twine and Emil Riis has been nothing short of exceptional. Mehmeti has two goals and one assist to his name so far in just four games, which is form that could propel the Robins even further up the table if he is to continue in the same vein.

After joining from League One side Wycombe Wanderers in 2023, like Vyner, the Albanian's contract is set to expire in June 2026, so the club certainly have a decision on their hands.

Mehmeti's exit could bring the Robins a decent sized fee, but so too could be hard to replace, as it is rare that a striker signing can ever guarantee goals. Being part of the fixtures and fittings at the club, as this is his fourth season at Ashton Gate, could mean that offering him a new deal would be shrewd business and a statement of intent to the rest of the Championship that Bristol City mean business in retaining their key assets.

With other clubs likely to come sniffing around upon the expiry of his contract, with the forward being so young, it would be borderline criminal to let such a talented player leave as a free agent at the end of the year, making Mehmeti a player that the club must either keep ties with, or sell at a good price.
