Burnley have moved to seal a deal for Steven Gerrard
Burnley look set to make a decision on Scott Parker and Steven Gerrard ahead of playing in the 2026/27 Championship season.
The Clarets have four Premier League games remaining, including facing Leeds United on Friday. It could be one of Scott Parker's final games in charge, with Parker holding talks with Burnley this week about his and the direction of the club next year after two seasons in charge.
Former Liverpool hero Steven Gerrard has been linked with Burnley as a potential replacement, with the 45-year-old out of work after leaving Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in January. It was his third managerial role after a successful stint with Rangers and a less successful spell with Aston Villa.
Many football fans have been wondering what happens next for a player with such an outstanding career as a player and it has recently been stated by Gerrard that he is open to a role in the Championship as his next step, which could man Burnley or Bristol City.

Speaking of next steps, Burnley have already issued a statement regarding what's next for them in the Championship. But there is plenty of uncertainty about who will be in the dugout following their third relegation in five years.
It's reported that Craig Bellamy is an alternative to Gerrard, with the current Wales boss an assistant at Burnley under Vincent Kompany. It's also been stated that Gerrard is keen on the Burnley role.
Competition has already emerged in their pursuit, with Bristol City also an option for Gerrard after Roy Hodgson departs this summer. It has also been reported by the Independent that Gerrard is open to becoming the next Bristol City manager.
However, a further update has emerged and it appears Burnley have stolen a march on their Championship rivals, with journalist Sacha Tavolieri revealing that he has given Burnley the green light despite the Bristol City interest.
He adds that things are speeding up in terms of a deal and that the Clarets have entered talks with Gerrard’s representatives to make the him their new head coach for 2026/27.

It could be argued that Parker has earned another crack at promotion with Burnley because his track record in the Championship speaks for itself from their last campaign. He has already guided teams like Fulham and Bournemouth back to the Premier League before now too.
Perhaps things have gone a bit stale at Turf Moor but he has showed a clear ability to organise sides, manage pressure, and navigate the demands of a gruelling 46-game season. That kind of repeat success is rare at this level, even with clubs with a big budget and quality in their ranks.
You still have to be able to manage that situation and turning elsewhere would introduce uncertainty; many alternatives, like Gerrard, lack that proven promotion pedigree. With Parker, Burnley are backing a manager who understands exactly what is required to bounce back at the first attempt.
