South Africa secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Ghana in the opening match of Group C on Monday, July 7 in Oujda. Defending champions, Banyana Banyana, made a strong start to the tournament, reaffirming their ambitions to clinch a second consecutive crown.

The first Group C clash officially kicked off the 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations today. This much-anticipated encounter between South Africa’s Banyana Banyana and Ghana’s Black Queens took place at the Stade d'Honneur in Oujda.

Winning experience and clinical finishing from Motlhalo and Seoposenwe

The match began at a high tempo, with both teams eager to seize control from the opening whistle. Amidst a flurry of free kicks and corners, both sides fiercely tested each other during the opening quarter of an hour. As the minutes ticked by, the South Africans ramped up the pressure on Ghana’s defense and won a penalty. Linda Motlhalo made no mistake from the spot, coolly converting to break the deadlock in the 28th minute (1-0).

As the Black Queens pushed forward in search of an equalizer, South Africa wasted little time to double their lead. Just six minutes later, Jermaine Seoposenwe, already positioned up front, latched onto a pass from Lebohang Ramalepe and fired home a superb strike. Earning her 100th cap, the 31-year-old sealed victory for her side (2-0). The second half saw a more balanced contest, with no further fireworks. South Africa managed their advantage expertly, while Ghana struggled to create clear-cut chances.
