The closing minutes of Levante’s derby with Valencia ended in controversy after Eray Cömert appeared with a shirt held like a flag, prompting several Levante staff to try to take it from him, according to Superdeporte. They viewed the Swiss player’s gestures as a provocation.
From Mestalla there was an apology for those scenes. Carlos Corberán told the press he was apologising on Valencia’s behalf, noting the tension, stressing their respect for Levante and saying the club did not like any perception of disrespect.
On the pitch, César Tárrega took a similar line. He agreed with Manu, the Levante full-back, that celebrations should show respect, said they would celebrate with their own fans and accepted it was the hosts’ ground.
Tárrega added that it was a time to celebrate but not so effusively, and that players could do so in a more restrained way while respecting the opponents and their situation. He apologised to Levante and their supporters if they felt offended and wished them luck.
Asked about the incident, Luis Castro kept his response short. He said people must know how to win and lose, adding that those who do not give anything to football.
The late flashpoint capped a tense finish shaped by rivalry and what was at stake. Valencia reiterated their respect for Levante and sought to draw a line under the matter.
