Celtic have reportedly set their valuation for central defender Stephen Welsh. The Scottish Champions recalled the 26-year-old from Motherwell after an impressive first half of the season. Welsh started alongside Dane Murray in the heart of the Celtic defence for their routine win over Auchinleck Talbot on Sunday evening.

Celtic recalled the player as cover for the departed Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, who returned to Man City before going on loan to Köln. Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph has stated that Celtic have set a £400k asking price for the ex-Scotland U21 International.

Speaking to Off The Underside Podcast, the Sky Sports reporter confirmed the Celtic stance on Welsh.

“With Stephen Welsh, he had interest from Aberdeen as well, but Celtic quoted them about £400,000 and Aberdeen sort of moved on.”

As a result of the appearance at Rugby Park, Welsh can only play for Celtic and Motherwell, which limits Celtic’s options to sell the player in January.

Celtic may be plotting to use Welsh as a makeweight in order to sign Tawanda Maswanhise. The 23-year-old striker has been linked with a move to Paradise with Martin O’Neill and Mark Fotheringham watching the player score against Ross County at the weekend, taking his tally for the season to fifteen goals in all competitions, as well as two assists.
