Kieran Gill’s Chelsea Confidential is always a good read, and this week he has presented an interesting dilemma over Marc Guiu.

The striker was recalled from Sunderland before the deadline to cover for the injured Liam Delap. However an injury ruled him out of the Carabao Cup third round game earlier this week, one of the key fixtures he was wanted for.
“Until this season, the 19-year-old would have been cup-tied [in the Carabao], having played in Sunderland’s second-round Carabao Cup defeat by Huddersfield during his short-lived loan spell on Wearside,” Gill explained.
“But even though the rules have changed, a niggle picked up in training the day before the trip to Lincolnshire ruled him out. So what now?”
If Liam Delap is indeed back fit in November, the earliest possible we could see him, that would make using Guiu almost pointless. Chelsea’s next game in that competition is at the end of October. Feasibly, we could be using Guiu just once then relegating him back to third choice.
“Liam Delap is targeting a November return from the injury that sparked Guiu’s recall from Sunderland, but when Delap does come back, it may be too late for the Spaniard to go loan,” Gill explains.
“If he plays a single minute for Chelsea this season, he won’t be able to go out on loan in January, as you cannot play for three clubs in the same campaign under FA rules.”
Wouldn’t it be a better idea to play Tyrique George up front against Wolves in the cup game, not play Guiu between now and January, then send him on loan somewhere? It seems likely he plays more between January and May for a team that needs him than he will if he just plays a few games for us as third choice striker.
What a pickle.
