The Independent don’t report many transfer exclusives, so when they do we tend to listen.
Today’s piece by Miguel Delaney was all about Dean Huijsen, and was very good news for Chelsea fans. He claims that the club have “taken a lead” in the pursuit of the defender, who is in demand from a variety of top clubs in the Premier League and beyond.
“The 19-year-old is understood to now be seriously considering Chelsea, who are one of many major clubs pursuing the centre-back,” Delaney writes.
So far the leading candidates have also included Liverpool and Real Madrid, and one feels that it’s likely Huijsen would pick one of them were they to get seriously involved.
But with Virgil Van Dijk having signed a new contract at the former and Raul Asencio emerged at the latter this season, it is increasingly looking like they will step back and leave the Blues an open path to their target.
Delaney reports that a 7 year contract is on the table from the Blues, and that they will try to sign him before the Club World Cup – which is now just 6 weeks away.
Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill and Axel Disasi in a montage of Chelsea defence and defenders.
Signing Huijsen would mean a number of sales in defence – but we’re expecting those sales either way. We currently have a broad crop of central defenders but none have really stepped up to make themselves stand out.
Selling them will create space on the wage bill, space in the squad and some PSR headroom for us to play with. It’s not quite sure who could go, but Axel Disasi and Renato Veiga are surely favourites right off the bat, given they’ve been out on loan.
