Chelsea’s efforts to land a centre back this summer have so far focused on two players – Dean Huijsen and Marc Guehi.

Both are super talented and Premier League experienced. They both offer slightly different profiles, but would be premium options that instantly upgrade the options Enzo Maresca has available. Both are in serious demand though, so it makes sense that the club are keeping their options open by looking at other targets too.

Physical Serie A defender has had serious Chelsea interest

One name that we heard mentioned a few weeks ago that then went quiet until recently was that of Pietro Cormuzzo. The defender has had a breakthrough season for Fiorentina, making 41 appearances in all competitions.

He’s solid on the ball, physically great and has some proper Italian defensive instincts. It’s easy to see why there’s such a fuss over him.

Let’s not forget, we may yet Fiorentina in the Conference League final, if they can overturn their first deficit against Real Betis in their semi final. So maybe we’ll get a closer look at him in the next few weeks?

Comuzzo signs on to leave Chelsea and Premier League peers empty handed

According to TBR Football, however, it may already be too late. Their chief football correspondent Graeme Bailey says that we were among the teams who made “direct enquiries” about the 20 year old who is one of the most “sough after young defenders in Europe.”

But Fiorentina have now apparently agreed a new long term contract with him to reward him for his breakout. It’s probably a wise decision for his career progression.

Given he’s still young and has no Premier League experience, he probably was not towards the top of our list anyway, but we’re still very curious to see what is next for him.
