Blues let down by costly errors at crucial junctures

Chelsea suffered their third defeat to Arsenal in as many meetings with them under Liam Rosenior as the Gunners won 2-1 at the Emirates in a game where Pedro Neto was sent off.

The game was level at half-time through two goals from corners, scored by William Saliba and an own goal by Piero Hincapie.

But Arsenal restored their lead when Jurrien Timber headed in from another corner, and then Neto was shown a second yellow card which offered Chelsea no help in chasing the game.

Dom Smith was at the Emirates to rate the Chelsea players’ performances...

Distributed well despite a nervy moment early on when he was dispossessed. But at fault for the second Arsenal goal when he was caught in no-man’s-land and Timber headed in. Fine save to deny Eberechi Eze late on.

Reece James 7

A good performance from the right-back, who used his strength, evaded challenges, and held on to the ball.

Trevoh Chalobah 6

One of Chelsea’s better defenders on the day, making plenty of interceptions.

Mamadou Sarr 6

On the occasion of his first-ever Premier League start, put in an impressive showing, though might have done more to prevent Arsenal’s opener from travelling over the line.

Jorrel Hato 6

Shown a yellow card but produced a professional display as he again deputised for the injured Marc Cucurella.

Moises Caicedo 7

Won the ball on a lot of occasions and helped the back-line out when Arsenal put them under pressure from open play. Came close with a late piledriver.

Andrey Santos 5

Safe and dependable in possession. Taken off with 15 minutes to go as Rosenior turned to fresh legs.

Cole Palmer 5

Tried to make things happen but didn’t get into shooting positions. Booked for holding Bukayo Saka as Arsenal sought to counter at pace.

Enzo Fernandez 5

Pretty anonymous in midfield for large parts of the match. Had one shot well saved by David Raya. Booked.

Pedro Neto 2

One of his worst performances for Chelsea. Had already been one of the most error-prone and ineffective players on the pitch when he scythed Gabriel Martinelli down and picked up a second yellow card. Sent off at a key moment in the game.

Joao Pedro 6

Saw plenty of the ball and was handy as an outlet. Had two headed chances which went awry.
