FC Barcelona oversaw up to 10 departures from their team in the last summer transfer window, but this number could have been even higher, as some other clubs were also interested in getting even more of their players.
This was particularly the case with the 22-year-old midfielder Fermin Lopez, who was strongly linked with Chelsea in the latter phase of the transfer window. However, he ultimately decided to stay, and his conversations with some of his teammates helped him make this decision.
On the other hand, Chelsea have still not thrown in the towel, as Fichajes reports that they are looking to make another approach for the Spaniard in the upcoming winter window, and the Blues are preparing an €80 million bid to get him.
The Premier League side had sent a formal bid for Fermin in the summer, but Barcelona refused to part ways with a player who has become increasingly important for Hansi Flick.
The Spaniard, who made 46 appearances across all competitions last season with eight goals and 10 assists, is viewed in London as an ideal reinforcement for a squad still searching for stability.
Chelsea’s recruitment strategy remains focused on young talent, and Lopez fits the profile perfectly: versatile, energetic, and already experienced at the top level.
For Barcelona, the challenge lies in balancing Lopez’s development with fierce competition in midfield. With Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Dani Olmo, Marc Casado, and others all vying for minutes, the youngster may struggle to secure a consistent role.
Should his playing time diminish, Chelsea’s promise of a starring position in the Premier League could become increasingly tempting.
However, with Pedri, Dani Olmo, Gavi, Raphinha, etc., all available to play as playmakers, it remains to be seen how many minutes Fermin Lopez will get and whether a lack of minutes would open any doors for Chelsea to get him.
