With half of it gone, Moises Caicedo is having an excellent season.

After a debut campaign at Chelsea where he struggled to live up to his price tag, he’s really found his feet and is an anchor and a reference for Enzo Maresca’s system.

The numbers he’s putting up are superb, Both in attack and defence, he’s competing with the very best in Europe at his position.

According to FBRef, he has 62 tackles this season in the Premier League. That puts him 3rd in Europe’s top 5 leagues. What makes that even more exceptional is that teams which dominate the ball as Chelsea do create fewer chances for their players to tackle – so the other teams represented in the top 10 are Crystal Palace, Genoa, Wolves, Everton and Fulham. So coming 3rd is even more impressive considering that.

In an attacking sense, Caicedo’s role is to deliver the ball to the creative players quickly and efficiently, and he’s doing that really well this year too. He’s 8th in Europe for passes into the final third, ahead of technical geniuses like Pedri and Youri Tielemans.

Caicedo’s most impressive game yet sees Chelsea get one over top 4 rival

In our home win against Newcastle back in October – a win that could become massive in the top 4 race, he made 4 tackles, 6 interceptions and a clearance, as well as 2 key passes. He completed 94.2% of his passes in that game, which was possible his most impressive showing of the season.

He got a lot of praise from Cole Palmer that day, but what’s really important is that Caicedo is making this sort of showing a regular thing. If we could get other players to fulfil their talent as he is, we’d be right back in this title race.
