Chelsea’s pursuit of another Women’s Super League title took a serious hit as Arsenal delivered a sharp, controlled 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge, with Beth Mead at the heart of everything.
The breakthrough arrived shortly after break when Alessia Russo slid a pass through the back line and Mead powered her finish beyond Hannah Hampton.
The Gunners struck again within minutes, Mead this time teeing up Mariona Caldentey, who calmly sidestepped a defender before passing the ball into the corner.
Chelsea pushed forward in search of a response but lacked composure in key moments. Erin Cuthbert and Sjoeke Nüsken both missed headed chances as frustration grew inside the stadium.
The visitors had set the tempo from the opening exchanges, pressing high and moving the ball with confidence. Arsenal could have led earlier, while Stina Blackstenius later forced Hampton into a pair of saves as the Gunners threatened to add further gloss.
The defeat leaves Chelsea six points behind leaders Manchester City with a game in hand for the champions, while Arsenal close to within one point of the Blues and strengthen their grip on third place.
