Chelsea are reportedly not planning to sell Manchester United target Andrey Santos this summer, unless a crucial requirement is met, possibly forcing them into a drastic change of stance.
Heading into the summer window, bolstering the midfield department is believed to be United’s top priority.
United’s midfield has been their primary vulnerability this season and if the club hopes to transform into a genuinely competitive force, this area must be addressed. The need for quality reinforcements has become even more urgent following Casemiro’s impending departure.
The Brazilian confirmed in January that he will depart as a free agent upon the expiry of his contract.
There is also some uncertainty over the future of Bruno Fernandes, while a breakthrough over fresh terms has yet to be reached with Kobbie Mainoo’s camp.
Some of the players that continue to be linked to United include Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace), Carlos Baleba (Brighton and Hove Albion), Sandro Tonali (Newcastle) and Felix Nmecha (Borussia Dortmund).
One player who fits the bill is Santos, a midfielder United have tracked for some time. The 22-year-old impressed during his loan at Strasbourg last season, notching 10 goals and three assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances. While his game time was limited under Enzo Maresca upon his return to Chelsea, he has flourished under Liam Rosenior, a coach familiar with his game from their time together in France.
Santos joining United as part of the deal that sent Alejandro Garnacho to Stamford Bridge was a real possibility but it didn’t materialise.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, prying Santos away from the Blues won’t be straightforward. He reports that while United remain admirers of the Brazilian, Chelsea are keen to keep hold of him. That said, there is understood to be a specific condition that, if met, could potentially open the door for the Red Devils to finally land their long-term target.
Jacobs said [as quoted by The Chelsea Chronicle], “The only other name that I’ve heard and I’ll kind of repeat it from the Garnacho talks, is Andre Santos. And right now, I think less likely than it was when Man United and Chelsea were negotiating over Alejandro Garnacho because at that point, Santos was not really getting game time. And now he’s playing under a manager who knows him really well from Strasbourg.”
“And as a consequence, Chelsea’s not for sale stance, which was said at the time when they were talking over Alejandro Garnacho, is probably one that you would expect them to double down on heading into the summer.”
Jacobs continued, “But if Chelsea brings in another midfielder, you’ve got Enzo Fernandez, who’s been pushed forward.”
“If Romeo Lavia gets fit, Ree James is being played in midfield and Moises Caicedo is basically undroppable. So Chelsea do have a lot of midfielders and Manchester United’s interest in Andre Santos also remains.”
“It’s just not currently a market opportunity and because of all these long-term contracts that Chelsea hand out as it stands at the moment in any negotiation, they’ve got all of the cards.”
United are next in action on Sunday, March 15, when they host Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.
