Inter Milan got their season off to a winning start against Torino, and emphatically so.

In Cristian Chivu’s first Serie A match in charge, the Nerazzurri beat the Granata 5-0.

Alessandro Bastoni scored the opener from a corner, whilst Marcus Thuram made it two before halftime.

Then, goals from Lautaro Martinez and a second from Thuram put the match fully out of sight in Inter’s favour.

Then, striker Ange-Yoan Bonny came on and scored a fifth in his Inter debut. Meanwhile, there were also league debuts for the likes of Petar Sucic, Luis Henrique, and Andy Diouf.

In the case of Sucic, it was a full debut, as the Croatian international started, pulling the strings in an all-action midfield performance and even bagging an assist for Thuram’s first goal.

Cristian Chivu: “Inter Milan Showed Maturity” Vs Torino

After the match, Inter coach Cristian Chivu gave his thoughts.

“From the first day of preseason, my players embraced the reality of what they had to do,” said the Romanian.

“They accepted the workload. And the fact that they needed to have a sort of retreat.”

Chivu continued that Inter’s players “worked tirelessly.”

“And today we showed up in good condition.”

“Even for us in the coaching staff, it was a bit of an unknown to do so much preparation without much time available.”

Then, Chivu, who spent six years as an Inter player, commented that “returning to a stadium like the San Siro as a coach of a team where I wrote important pages of history is a strong emotion.”

“But I don’t focus on the past,” added the 44-year-old. “I focus on the present, because I have a huge responsibility.”

Meanwhile, Chivu was very cagey in response to a question about Inter’s drawn-out pursuit of Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman this summer.

“Lookman isn’t part of our squad, he’s an Atalanta player,” said the Inter coach. “And I’m not talking about anyone who isn’t part of our squad.”

Then, Chivu said that Inter’s tactical approach “depends on the entire team’s attitude.”

“Whether they press well or not,” explained the Romanian.

“We’re trying to work on reading the game and sliding across the pitch. Obviously it’s not easy, but I’m not afraid of anything.”

Then Chivu added that “it’s not just a question of physical fitness, but also mentality.”

“I focus on the mental aspect because it’s important, just as the athletic side of things is,” the Nerazzurri coach went on.

“Mentality always gives you something extra. And we’re working hard on that as well.”
