Las Águilas have had an eventful seven days. It started with the exits of star midfielders Álvaro Fidalgo and Allan Saint-Maximim, and ended the week by announcing the arrival of a Brazilian talent.
Fidalgo’s move away from América came after the club accepted a move for him to join Real Betis. Saint-Maximim’s sudden departure came in light of racism aimed towards his children in the Mexican capital.
Mexico’s grandest and most decorated club have responded with a marquee signing, making their intentions clear for the Clausura. Ahead of their weekend clash with Monterrey, it was announced that Raphael Veiga has signed on an initial loan from Brazilian giants Palmeiras.
Born in São Paulo, the 30-year-old arrives in Mexico with an impressive trophy cabinet. América bring to the table a two-time Brazilian champion, four-time Paulista champion and a back-to-back Copa Libertadores winner in 2019 and 2020.
Veiga’s display of awards will excite the Americanistas, but it is his record in front of goal which will get them thinking that they have just signed a real game changer.
Prior to 2025, the attacking midfielder had scored at least 10 goals in each of the last five campaigns, whilst putting up respectable numbers for assists at the same time.
His best seasons in the green and white of Palmeiras came in 2023, where he netted 18 goals and contributed 16 assists. Even in 2025, when his records dipped, Veiga managed to score seven times whilst setting up his teammates on 16 occasions.
Veiga made his debut for the 16-time Liga MX champions this weekend as América edged to a 1-0 victory.
At the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes, in Mexico City, Veiga came on in the 67th minute to play a cameo role as Alejandro Zendejas scored the only goal of the game.
Under the new manager, and fellow Brazilian, André Jardine, Veiga will be hoping to play his best football in an effort to make América title contenders once again.
Next up for América is a Concacaf Champions Cup second leg with CD Olímpia. Sadly, Veiga is prohibited from playing, having not been registered in time. However, we could see the attacker make his first start in Mexico next weekend in the Clásico Nacional against Chivas.
