The 2026 Copa do Brasil will feature a record 126 clubs and, for the first time in the competition’s history, a single-match final. According to Globo.com, seven states have lifted the trophy since 1989, with São Paulo leading both title count and number of different champions.
This year’s field is 34 larger than in 2025. Across the editions, 17 clubs from seven states have been crowned champions.
São Paulo leads on 12, followed by Minas Gerais on 8, with Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul on 7 apiece. Paraná, Pernambuco and Santa Catarina have one each, through Athletico-PR, Sport and Criciúma respectively.
São Paulo also has the most distinct champions, six in total. In 2025, Corinthians claimed a fourth title, drawing level with Palmeiras.
The best campaigns without a title belong to Bahia, Ceará, the Distrito Federal and Goiás, all runners-up. Goiás lost the second edition’s final to Flamengo, 1-0 away then 0-0 at Serra Dourada.
In 2010, Vitória finished runners-up to Santos, coached by Dorival Júnior and featuring Neymar and Ganso. Santos won 2-0 at Vila Belmiro, then Vitória won 2-1 at Barradão.
In 1994, Ceará were beaten by Grêmio, with the only goal across both legs scored by Nildo at the Olímpico. In 2002, Brasiliense lost to Corinthians, 2-1 at Morumbi then 1-1 at Estádio Boca do Jacaré.
Linhares in 1994 and Remo in 1991 reached the semi-finals, the best returns for Espírito Santo e Pará respectively.
