Corinthians beat Palmeiras on penalties, reach U20 Paulista semis

On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 15, Corinthians hosted Palmeiras at the Alfredo Schürig Stadium, Fazendinha, for the second leg of the quarterfinals of the Paulista Women’s Under-20 Championship and left the field with a 1-1 draw. Since the first leg had also ended with the same score, the decision went to penalties and the Brabinhas advanced.

Corinthians opened the scoring in the Derby just four minutes into the first half. In the play, Helô Camargo controlled the ball and, with a classy backheel, found Manu Olivan. The forward finished with the inside of her foot and sent the ball into the top corner, leaving the Palmeiras goalkeeper with no chance.

The equalizer came at the start of the second half. After a foul that wasn’t called in favor of the Brabinhas, Stefanie took advantage of the loose ball and fired a long-range shot, lobbing Rillary and scoring a beautiful goal. Despite chances created by both teams, the score remained level until the end of regulation time.

In the penalty shootout, both teams converted their first kicks, but Timão took the lead when Rillary saved Bruna Hirata’s shot. The Brabinhas stayed strong until the Corinthians goalkeeper shone again, stopping Jheniffer’s attempt.

With the advantage, all Ester had to do was score to secure qualification. However, Bruna Hirata guessed the right corner, and her teammate found the net right after. The decision came down to Júlia Romero, who calmly took the shot, sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, and sealed Corinthians’ spot.

To start the match, coach Bia Vaz lined up the following team: Rillary; Rafa Rocha, Brunna, Dany Pereira and Ester; Helô Camargo, Gaby Tomé and Gabi Pires; Raíssa, Manu Olivan and Rayane.

The bench options were: Sophia Trindade, Rafa Rodrigues, Lara Mel, Emelym, Dafhiny, Gabi Jordi, Mel, Manu Teixeira and Júlia Romero. Now, the club from Parque São Jorge awaits the definition of the next stages of the state competition.
