Corinthians’ number 10 has passport stolen, delays joining national team

The forward Memphis Depay, from Corinthians, had his passport stolen and was unable to travel to the Netherlands on the night of last Sunday, the 5th, as announced by the national federation, KNVB. The player, called up to join the national team during the October FIFA Date, needs to resolve the document issue before heading to Europe.

The KNVB also informed that the expectation is that the player will be able to travel soon and join the group in the coming days. The athlete returned to the Corinthians team on Saturday, after being sidelined due to injury, and participated in the final minutes of the 3-0 victory over Mirassol, in the 27th round of the Brasileirão.

Coach Ronald Koeman commented on the situation, regretting that he cannot count on the forward right away: “This is unfortunate, especially for Memphis, but also for us. Naturally, we want to start preparations for an international break with the full squad. At the same time, there is a force majeure situation. We hope he can travel to join us at the training camp as soon as possible.”

It is worth remembering that Memphis is the number 10 for the Netherlands, with 104 appearances that have earned him 52 goals and the title of the top scorer in the history of the national team. In this FIFA date, the team will face two opponents in the UEFA Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup: Malta, away, and Finland, at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam.
