Corinthians met Memphis Depay’s representatives on Wednesday and received his counter-offer to stay. The Dutch forward asked for a deal running to July 2029, a term the board did not welcome.
The reluctance stems from him turning 35 in the final year. Talks over an extension, first reported by ge.globo, are expected to reach a conclusion in the coming days.
His proposal includes a pay cut in exchange for a long contract and joint commercial initiatives with the club. It carries slimmer performance bonuses than his current agreement, which expires on 31 July.
Memphis has also tasked his team with finding partners to ease the club’s costs while boosting his income. His camp say they have made sizeable concessions, including agreeing to instalments on roughly R$ 40 million owed.
Corinthians expect him to report back to CT Joaquim Grava between Saturday and Monday after 25 days off since the Netherlands’ World Cup exit. His return falls in the decisive week for his contract.
Ezze Seguros are working on two fronts to aid a deal, seeking to extend their sponsorship beyond July and to appoint Memphis as the face of a new product, Ezze Seguro A10, with an equity stake.
Co-founder Ivo Jucá Machado has travelled to Ibiza, where Memphis is on holiday, to advance talks, with former finance chief Pedro Silveira also involved. The renewal would not be blocked by transfer bans, as it is treated as an extension rather than a new registration.
