Corinthians relaunch study group, honour women's team and legend

On the evening of Tuesday, the 21st, the theater at Parque São Jorge hosted the Meeting for the Restructuring of the Corinthians Study Center (NECO), an event organized by the Cultural Department of the Alvinegro. Members and fans in general were present, along with board members and also former player Basílio, who was honored during the meeting.

The meeting was initially presented by Corinthians historian Fernando Wanner, who gave a speech about the historical importance of former player Neco for the club. The forward and Alvinegro idol played for the club between 1913 and 1930, accumulating titles and top scorer awards, and became an example of Corinthianism off the field, being the first to be honored with a bust at the Corinthians headquarters, back in 1929.

Wanner explained that naming the study center after Neco is a way to honor the history of this Corinthian idol. It is worth remembering that NECO was originally founded in 2015 with the aim of preserving and studying the history of Corinthians in all its dimensions, whether sporting, cultural, or social.

Following the historian's speech, cultural director Rafael Castilho took the floor, celebrating the resumption of the center's activities. Before that, however, a tribute was paid to the Corinthians women's team, which won the Copa Libertadores for the sixth time over the weekend. A tribute video was shown, and then director Iris Sesso and president Osmar Stabile took the stage with the continental tournament trophy.

Iris received flowers and gave a speech, highlighting the department's planning for the FIFA Champions Cup, which will be held between January and February 2026 in England. Stabile spoke next, stating that the board will provide full support to the team for a good campaign and reinforcing the management's support for the sport. Subsequently, all the women present in the theater were invited to come on stage to be honored with applause.

In another tribute moment, former player and Corinthian idol Basílio was invited to join the discussion panel. At this point, the 1977 Paulista Championship trophy was displayed on stage, won with a goal by the forward against Ponte Preta at Morumbi on October 13 of that year. Basílio was invited to talk about that day, sharing stories and answering questions about the behind-the-scenes before and after the title.

In another part of his speech, the former player emphasized the importance of respecting the history of the Alvinegro idols and former athletes as a way of preserving their legacies to the club. He also defended the club as an institution, addressing Stabile and saying: “The Corinthians brand is unsellable”, which was followed by applause from those present.

Following this, the director made an announcement regarding Black Consciousness Month in November. The cultural department is gathering materials and selecting documents to promote an exhibition on the black history of Corinthians at the museum located in the west atrium of the Neo Química Arena. All details have not yet been defined and will be announced later.

The agenda then moved to details of the restructuring of the study center itself. Castilho presented the working groups through which NECO's actions and campaigns will be developed, counting not only on the collaboration of members but also any interested fan. Anyone wishing to participate in the activities should express their interest via email at neco@sccorinthians.com.br, indicating which group they would like to join.

Currently, the defined working groups are: Theater (planning of plays and similar activities), Memorial (preservation and digitization of the historical collection), Parque São Jorge 100 (celebration of the centenary of the headquarters' foundation), Invasion 50 (celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Maracanã invasion in 1976), Corinthians of Nations (actions to connect with foreign communities related to the club), Educational and Academic (actions to connect with universities and similar institutions), Sarau da Fiel and “Coringonas” Project (actions to value Corinthian women and combat sexism).

Towards the end of the meeting, the Fiel Torcida exhibition was promoted, on display until December 20 at the Memorial of Parque São Jorge, featuring 20 photographs of fans – seven of whom were present at the meeting on Monday, being invited to take the stage and explain their works.
