Corinthians striker achieves historic first in Women's Libertadores

During the campaign that resulted in Corinthians’ sixth Copa Libertadores Femenina title, several names stood out, each at a specific moment or game. However, one player once again shone in attack, proving decisive and further cementing her place among the sport’s idols: forward Gabi Zanotti, who became the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.

This achievement earned the Brabas a trophy, presented by CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez at the awards ceremony after Corinthians’ victory over Deportivo Cali-COL on penalties, following a goalless draw in regular time. The athlete’s accomplishment, however, was special not only for this reason, but also for another historic milestone.

With her top scorer title in this edition of the Libertadores, Gabi Zanotti became the first player in the tournament’s history to be crowned, single-handedly, the top scorer in South America for two consecutive years. After all, she had already been the Libertadores’ top scorer last year, with five goals, helping the Alvinegro win their fifth South American title and making her a favorite to win the Reina de América award, given by the Uruguayan newspaper El País—which she did, in fact, win in December.

The note about Zanotti’s isolated top scorer titles is justified, as in previous years two other athletes managed to be top scorers in the Libertadores for two consecutive years—but always tied with other players. This was the case for Venezuelan Oriana Altuve in 2016 and 2017 and Brazilian (and Corinthians player) Vic Albuquerque in 2020 and 2021.
