Corinthians’ number 8 reviews win, says he’s ready for a full 90 minutes

Midfielder Rodrigo Garro spoke to journalists in the mixed zone at Neo Química Arena, right after Corinthians’ 1-0 victory over Atlético this Saturday, the 18th, in the 29th round of the Brazilian Championship. The Argentine talked about his positioning during the match, often playing deeper, which prevented him from getting into the box and taking shots at the opponent’s goal. He reflected on the matter:

“It depends on the moment in the game. Sometimes I feel like I can’t keep playing higher up because of the opponent’s high pressing, but I also understand that I have to help with that, with playing out from the back. Yes, unfortunately, I end up being too far away to take a shot or create a goal-scoring chance. But the team plays well like this, and I really like it.”

The number 8 said he sees progress in the Alvinegro, although he understands the team still goes through some instability. “Corinthians is too big a club to lose one game, win two, then lose another. So, we have to work to win every game, something we know unfortunately doesn’t always happen. But it’s a team that’s organized. We keep the ball the whole time. No opponent has been better than us. That’s why I’m also happy with the attitude the group has.”, he said.

Asked about his relationship with Yuri Alberto and Memphis Depay, the other members of the so-called “GYM Trio,” Garro said it’s good: “It’s very good. I also understand the responsibility we carry. But I think Corinthians belongs to everyone together, it’s a complete team. Those who are playing, those who aren’t. So, that’s the path we’re working on.”

The midfielder also said he hopes to play the full 90 minutes again soon, as he already feels physically ready. “I always want to play. But the agreement was for me to start playing gradually and to say if I felt anything. And I think it was good. We had no issues, we played well. Physically, I did well. I worked a lot during the time I wasn’t playing. I think now is the time to start playing all 90 minutes.”, he stated.

Finally, Garro praised Maycon, whose goal sealed Corinthians’ victory this Saturday: “A guy who really understands the game, who also understands the club’s current moment. An idol here at the club. I think he helps a lot when the team is under pressure, when we’re fighting for the ball. He understands practically every moment of the game and I think it’s important to have him with us.”
