The 20-year-old looks set to exit the CBS Arena
Coventry City have seen another club join the race to sign striker Norman Bassette.
Frank Lampard’s side have started the 2025/26 Championship campaign in fine form, dispatching Derby County in a 5-3 victory, before hammering QPR 7-1.
However, there have been some negatives, including their EFL Cup exit at the hands of Millwall and a frustrating stalemate at home against Hull City.
Bassette has been a popular target in the summer window and was strongly linked with a loan move to Eredivisie side FC Utrecht.
However, the Sky Blues offered a buy-option that was too high for the Dutch side, which caused that deal to fall through.
Now, according to Sacha Tavolieri, Ligue 2 side Reims are eyeing up a swoop for the striker as the end of the transfer window draws ever closer.
Westerlo and KV Mechelen are also mentioned by Tavolieri as interested parties, with the transfer saga expected to be wrapped up in the next 24 hours.
The 20-year-old reportedly attracted attention from Belgian side Anderlecht earlier in the summer, but that move didn’t materialise.
Coventry bought Bassette from French side Caen for between £2 and 3 million last year but has struggled to leave a lasting impact at the CBS Arena.
Lampard confirmed after Coventry’s draw against Hull City that the forward’s omission from the matchday squad wasn’t fitness-related, which points towards an exit for the striker before the window slams shut.
Bassette has one cap for the Belgian national team, making his debut for the Red Devils in November 2024.
Despite glimmers of potential and promise, Bassette never managed to fully establish himself at the CBS Arena and it now seems like the opportunity has passed by.
Forwards such as Haji Wright, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ellis Simms aren’t likely to provide much chance of a breakthrough for the 20-year-old, and Lampard not naming him in the matchday squad during the early stages of the 2025/26 season outlines how highly the Sky Blues’ manager rates him.
With three teams now keen on acquiring Bassette, it seems unlikely that there are any chances of the striker remaining at Coventry.
However, at such a young age, there is still lots of potential for the attacker to realise, and he could become a much more complete player in years to come.
